This program provides comprehensive information on certification and licensure, sector regulations, and labor market trends to help newcomers develop realistic action plans to enter their professions in Canada. In addition, participants learn the terminology of their occupation as it is used at work, in job advertisements, and in testing/licensure.

Portfolio development is also a core component of the program. Through detailed occupational profiles, participants assess their skills and background against the competencies and requirements necessary to practice their professions in Ontario. Using the language of employers and regulatory bodies, they develop a portfolio to highlight their skills and experience relevant to the needs of the Ontario job market. Participants in this program are also assisted with job search through individual counseling, employer outreach, and a post-program Job Finding Club. The STIC program currently services immigrants in Toronto who have obtained their professional credentials outside of Canada in the following areas:

April 5
Roland Rhooms, STIC program, writes:
A number of staff members from the STIC Team and EAS recently attended the 2nd Annual Opportunities Conference from April 5-7. The focus of the conference was professional development and a networking opportunity for service practitioners in the Employment Preparation Sector.
The conference started with a bang with an inspiring, motivational message from Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. Mr. Carter was prized boxer who found himself wrongfully imprisoned for over 20 years. He has come back to share his message to those who are trying to make this world a better place for humans. It was very appropriate for our sector.
The rest of the time was filled with workshops geared towards the professional development of Career Management Practitioners. Some of the workshops included, "Career management, The Global View: A Future Focus Report", " Counsellors Too Can Start A Small Business", "The Birth of a Profession: Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development", just to name a few.
A marketplace was set up with exhibitors from the field, some of which included Human Resources Development Canada, The Burke Group, Canadian Career Development Foundation and the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
The conference provided a great learning opportunity and was enjoyed by all staff members.
