Weather

Because Nova Scotia is surrounded by water and lies near the Gulf Stream, its climate is more moderate than you might expect.

The Atlantic coast can be quite foggy and cool. Summer daytime highs often reach 32-33 C, especially away from the coast. Late July and early August often bring warm muggy nights. In the winter, snow often turns to rain in January and February.

Spring is short, cool and rainy in most places in Nova Scotia, usually with temperatures 5 degrees C cooler than summer. Autumn highs are around 13-21 C. Winters are coldest on the northern shore and in Cape Breton, where there's skiing. Cape Breton Island is generally a few degrees cooler than the rest of the province.

Tulips and apple blossoms are abundant the end of May and the first week of June. Along the northern shore of the province, the waters of Northumberland Strait are warm enough for swimming as late as mid September.
