Weather

Alberta is well known as Canada's sunniest province, with more clear days than anywhere else in Canada. June is probably the wettest month -- although it's still much drier than the Pacific Northwest. The mountain regions, though, are generally wetter and cloudier than the rest of the province. As in British Columbia, mountain weather can be very changeable and unpredictable.

Alberta experiences a variety of climatic conditions. It can reach 32 C in the south during the summer and below-zero -18 C during the winter.

In the summer, the average temperature ranges from 9 to 23 C, with warmer temperatures in the lower, southeast portions of the province. July and August can be hot and dry, but be prepared for cool temperatures the rest of the year.

Winter-sports lovers will find dry, cold weather and plenty (137 cm) of snow. January temperatures generally range from -16 to -1 C, though the warm Chinook winds in southern Alberta can raise them rather suddenly. It can snow in the Rockies in any month, and Lake Louise, known for it's beautiful shades of blue, may be ice-covered through May or June.
